Where to stay in Antigua Guatemala: three kinds of location
Antigua is compact, and the historic center can be explored on foot. That makes the location of your room the main choice. This page groups places to stay by area and does not rank hotels or neighborhoods. It does not name hotels either, because the right one depends on your dates, budget and tastes. Use the areas below to narrow the search, then compare rooms on your favorite booking site.
The center is laid out on a grid at about 1,500 m (4,900 ft), with cobblestone streets. Cobblestones can make walking harder if you have limited mobility, so ask about steps, taxis and the exact route to your door before you book.

Antigua Guatemala hotels by area
Three locations and what each one asks of you.
| Area | Good for | Keep in mind | Getting around |
|---|---|---|---|
| Historic center | Short walks to the Santa Catalina Arch, Parque Central, the cathedral and La Merced | Cobblestones. Check noise and the room's position yourself. | On foot |
| Eastern edge of the old town | The east side of the grid, next to the Santo Domingo ruins at 3a Calle Oriente 28 A | Measure the walk to the sights you plan to see, since walking times differ from hotel to hotel. | On foot, or a short taxi ride |
| Mountain lodge near Hobbitenango | A night above the valley, in the hills at Vuelta Grande | You need transport to reach town and your tours. | About 25 minutes by road from Antigua |
Which area fits you? If you have two or three days and want to see the churches, ruins and cafés, stay in or next to the center. If you want a night in the hills as part of a longer trip, a mountain lodge works, but add a day to your transport planning. The page on things to do in Antigua shows what you can reach on foot.
Tours with pickup from Antigua
Volcano hikes, coffee visits and day trips from town, with hotel pickup or a set meeting point and live availability.
The historic center
Around Calle del Arco, Guatemala's tourism board describes shops, cafés and places to stay. Parque Central, the cathedral, La Merced and Tanque La Unión are nearby. If your trip is mostly about sights, the center keeps your walking distances short. This is a practical conclusion, not a verdict on any hotel.
Sleeping near the arch means short walks to dinner and to the main sights. You should still follow the usual advice on empty streets after dark. The Santa Catalina Arch page explains the surroundings, and the safety page covers night walking.

The eastern edge and the mountain lodge
The eastern part of the old town includes the Santo Domingo complex, which gives its address as 3a Calle Oriente 28 A. Its archaeological zone is open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sunday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm, and it can close earlier without notice. The address is a geographic reference for this side of town, not a hotel recommendation.
Hobbitenango sits at Vuelta Grande, about 25 minutes from Antigua. If you stay on the mountain, remember the lodge's published terms: check-in 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm, check-out 8:00 am to 11:00 am, full prepayment that is not refundable, and local taxes paid on site. Those conditions apply to that lodge only. Compare them with the terms of any hotel in town. More on the day visit in the Hobbitenango guide.

What to check before you book
Questions that matter more than a star rating.
Your arrival
Antigua has no airport. You arrive via La Aurora in Guatemala City, and the road takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. Ask whether your hotel can arrange a transfer, or read the airport transfer guide. Try to arrive in daylight.
Early volcano pickups
Many volcano tours offer hotel pickup, and others start at a meeting point in town. Check the pickup rules for your area before you book, and tell the hotel about early departures. See the Acatenango guide for the overnight format.
Luggage storage
On overnight hikes you leave bags behind. Some tours include storage, so ask your hotel as well if you check out before you leave.
Semana Santa 2027
Holy Week runs from March 21 to March 28, 2027. Check rates and cancellation terms for those dates before you commit, and ask the hotel how processions affect access to the building. Read the Semana Santa guide.
Cancellation and taxes
Compare whether you can cancel, whether you must prepay and whether local taxes are in the price. Terms differ from one place to the next, as the mountain lodge shows.
Access and noise
Ask about stairs, the walk from where a taxi can stop, and which rooms face the street. These details do not show up in a star rating.
