Is Antigua Guatemala safe? The short answer

Antigua has a lot of visitors and a lot of visitor services, and Guatemala's tourism board describes the city as safe in its FAQ. The German Foreign Office is more cautious and names Antigua among the places where robberies happen. Read the two together. Popularity is not a safety guarantee, and the practical answer is to travel with the same care you would use in any city with street crime.

Most of the risk is ordinary: theft, robbery on empty streets, risky transport at night and the hazards of volcano trips. All of it can be reduced with a few habits. The sections below give the advisories with their dates, then the tips that matter in practice. This site is an independent guide, not a government source, so check the current advisory of your own country before you travel.

Practical safety tips for Antigua

Short, concrete habits that fit the advisories.

Keep valuables out of sight

Carry only the cash and cards you need for the day. Leave your passport in the hotel safe and keep a photo or copy on your phone. Do not leave a phone on a café table or in a back pocket in crowded places such as the market and the area around Parque Central.

Walk where other people walk

The historic center is a grid you can walk, but empty side streets are exactly what the German Foreign Office warns about. After dark, stay on lit streets with other people or take a taxi arranged by your hotel or restaurant.

Arrive in daylight

The advice not to travel outside cities at night matters most on the road between Guatemala City and Antigua. Book flights so that you land with time to spare, and arrange your transfer in advance. The airport transfer guide compares the options.

Be careful with public buses

The German Foreign Office points to robbery and technical risks on public intercity buses. Tourist shuttles and private transfers are separate services. A bright chicken bus is a sight in town, but it is not the same thing as a shuttle.

Cerro de la Cruz

The viewpoint is a popular walk of about 20 to 30 minutes from the historic center. Ask your hotel about current conditions before you go, go during the day, and do not assume that police accompany visitors. The Santa Catalina Arch and Cerro de la Cruz page has the details.

Ask before you photograph people

The German Foreign Office asks visitors to get consent before photographing Indigenous people and not to photograph children at all. This applies in Antigua and even more at markets such as Chichicastenango.

Volcano safety

Volcano trips carry their own risks, and they are the part of a Guatemala visit where conditions change fastest. Treat the points below as a minimum.

  • Go with a licensed guide. The German Foreign Office recommends volcano trips only with the police or licensed guides.
  • Expect altitude and cold. Acatenango reaches 3,976 m (13,045 ft). Nights can fall to around 0 °C (32 °F) or below. See the Acatenango guide for gear and costs.
  • Access can close. On August 4, 2026, police stopped tourist ascents of Acatenango because of Fuego activity. In 2017 six hikers died and two were injured on an Acatenango weekend trip, according to CONRED.
  • Follow the warnings for Fuego. On October 1, 2026, CONRED advised against staying on the meseta because of ballistic material. Eruptions and lava are never guaranteed, and nobody can promise a safe distance. Read the Volcán de Fuego guide.

Earthquakes, ash, roadblocks and who to call

Antigua sits in an earthquake zone. The 1773 earthquakes destroyed much of the city, and UNESCO lists earthquakes as part of the setting of the World Heritage site. Know the exits in your hotel and follow local instructions if the ground shakes. Ash from Fuego can also affect air travel for a short time, and heavy rain can trigger lahars on volcano slopes. Keep a day of slack in your plans, especially before a flight home. The weather page explains the rainy season.

For help, Guatemala has a state tourist assistance service run through the tourism board (known as ASISTUR, in older sources PROATUR), reachable on the short number 1500. The tourist police unit is called DISETUR and belongs to the national police. Do not rely on a private phone number you find online as an emergency line. Take out travel insurance that covers hiking at altitude and medical transport, and keep the policy number in your phone.

If you are choosing where to sleep, the where to stay page explains how location changes your walking routes at night.
